In this chapter the authors give a brief history of the way computer algebra systems have come to play a significant role in the teaching and learning of mathematics. They recognize that teachers’ reactions to new technology have and do vary from extremely enthusiastic to outright sceptical. An attempt is made to explain why many teachers are reluctant to use computer algebra with their students and suggestions are offered for sensitive ‘evangelisation’. There follows a series of philosophical reflections on teaching and learning methodologies.
