This paper presents some results of a pilot study which devised a 20-item paper-and-pencil, short-answer/multiple-choice questionnaire to assess students’ understanding of statistics and probability in Grades 3, 6 and 9. The items are presented, with discussion of response differences over the three grades, and the level and type of cognitive functioning associated with responses. (orig.)
