The first volume of this lexicon covers 4,101 terms related to higher education in the following 20 countries (listed in alphabetical order in English): Austria, Belgium (Dutch and French), Canada (English and French), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (French and German), the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The number of different languages covered is 12. The second volume will cover the central and eastern European countries (Greece, Turkey and Israel included). For each country under survey, the most widely used terms have been classified into the following nine sections: 1) The System as a Whole 2) Institutions and Their Structures 3) Governing and Administrative Bodies 4) Academic Staff 5) Students 6) Access and Admissions 7) Teaching and Learning 8) Examining and Evaluation 9) Degrees and Diplomas. The overall number of terms entered in the national sections of the Lexicon vary between 46 (Iceland) and 496 (United Kingdom). For the majority of countries, however, the number of entries averages 205 terms. (From the preface)
