Computers and curriculum change in mathematics. (English)

In this chapter, the authors examine various issues that have arisen or will arise in the face of efforts to change the school mathematics curriculum to accommodate to computers. After characterizing curriculum in terms of how it can be located in the educational system, the authors discuss curriculum change as it is constrained by institutional pressures, noting earlier efforts at reform and some barriers to change. They look more closely at the redefinition of school mathematics that is being brought about by computers and examine how curriculum change might be planned. The authors conclude by considering some alternative ways that computers might affect the mathematics curriculum under different conditions and assumptions. (orig.)
