Learning problem solving through computer programming. (English)
Ferguson, D.L., Advanced educational technologies for mathematics and science. Springer, Berlin (ISBN 3-540-56531-0). 339-362 (1993).
Although strong claims have been made concerning the cognitive benefits of learning computer programming, research results are inconclusive. This paper studies the findings of the recent research trying to clarify the relationship between problem solving skills and learning to program. The scope of the study covers work done with Logo, Prolog and expert system shells. Findings indicate the necessity of explicit instruction in the skills to be transferred to domains beyond programming. (orig.)
