Summary: Inferential statistics is the scientific method for evidence-based knowledge acquisition. However, the logic behind statistical inference is difficult for students to understand. Recent research has focused on learners' informal and intuitive ideas of inferential reasoning rather than on mastery of formal mathematical procedures. In this paper we consider a particular type of statistical decision problem. In change-point detection tasks, one must decide if a process is running smoothly or if it is out of control. It is argued that change-point detection tasks constitute a prime environment in which to investigate students' informal inferential reasoning. This claim is backed theoretically through reference to a framework by {\it A. Zieffler} et al. [Stat. Educ. Res. J. 7, No. 2, 40--58 (2008; ME 2009e.00120)] and demonstrated in an empirical study with second-year pre-service teachers.
