The writer wants to stimulate students fascination by making them aware of the unified nature of mathematics. Just one formula can describe a range of scientific problems. As an example he considers the reciprocal formula ``$\textstyle {1\over f} = {1 \over u} + {1\over v}$'' and applies for modelling six perfectly different situations -- in Optics, Geometry, Mechanics, Technology.
