ab: In this paper the authors give a range of examples that illustrate how
elementary school teachers can begin to develop children’s number
sense through the use of calculators before standard algorithms are
taught. The incidents we report arose in a research project in which
elementary school children were given free access to calculators from
their first days at school. Examples of the ways in which the children
were able to explore number concepts and computational procedures are
given, together with a brief summary of the results of extensive
written tests and interviews comparing children with and without
long-term exposure to calculators. (orig.)
