'But circles don't tessellate!', many children correctly say! Yet there are commercially produced sets of tessellating shapes with curved edges which look as if they are based on circles, and indeed this investigation begins from that assumption. In fact, the most interesting activity with such shapes is to try to work out how they were derived, and why they tessellate  far more interesting that just fitting them together.
