Summary: This paper presents a comparison of the responses to nine beliefs items and one confidence item of samples of Australian mathematics teachers, preservice primary teachers, preservice secondary mathematics teachers, and mathematics teacher educators. Significant differences were found between each pair of groups. The implications of these for the effectiveness of mathematics teacher education and professional learning for mathematics teachers are discussed.
