The present study examines students' understanding of the notion of counterexample and ways in which students use counterexamples. In particular, the study reveals difficulties students encounter in using counterexamples. Two hundred and four students participated in the study. The students were top level $9^{\text{th}}$ and $10^{\text{th}}$ grades students from four different schools. (Abstract)
