There is ample evidence of the substantial knowledge of number which children acquire naturally out of school. Yet for many children school mathematics remains a ruledriven, meaningless activity. By linking school mathematics to young children's reality, teachers can provide a context for meaningful mathematics. This paper describes ways in which classroom teachers, in a number of research projects, have used activities based on children's everyday experiences to create mathematically rich environments which can provide a framework for the learning of number.
