This is an important and remarkably thorough book on the teaching and learning of mathematics in Europe and North America from 16301880. The detailed analysis is supported by 150 images of pages from eleven cyphering books prepared by students of that period including the earliest extant handwritten manuscript of Abraham Lincoln. The abstract states that these cyphering books are discussed in ways consistent with the authors' main thesis, originally presented in [{\it N. Ellerton} and {\it M. A. Clements}, Rewriting the history of school mathematics in North America 16071861. The central role of cyphering books. Berlin: Springer (2012; Zbl 1295.97005)], that school mathematics was controlled by expectations associated with the cyphering tradition, especially the businessoriented abbaco curriculum.
