The deficient mathematics background of students has created difficulties in learning statistics, mainly when the statistics courses are taught in a traditional manner, based on theoretical concepts, emphasizing techniques and formal mathematics, and using examples unrelated to students' reality. This study aims to develop and apply an alternative pedagogical approach in the introductory statistics courses interdisciplinary and focused on statistical thinking which employs mathematical modelling as its main pedagogical tool. Another objective of this study is to demonstrate that, using mathematical modelling, it is possible to minimize the effects of tension on students, especially those students who have weak backgrounds in mathematics.
