Introduction: Much has been said and written about undergraduate research in mathematics: about its possibility, about its intrinsic quality (or lack of), about different models for facilitating it, and about its value to students, mentors, and even departments. Very little has been written about the systemic effect of undergraduate research on the mathematics profession and the development of mathematics as a whole. What follows is a first, necessarily speculative, attempt to begin to fill this gap.
