of multiple representations. Central to the authorsâ€™ concern is
finding an appropriate balance between conceptual understanding and
routine-manipulation skills. They conclude that the next generation of
research needs to provide rich descriptions and ways of thinking how
students reason symbolically when they have access to automated
symbolic manipulation.
