The article presents a short portrayal of the life and scientific work of the French mathematician and mathematical physicist Joseph Fourier (1768--1830) who is famous for his statement that any function across the interval $(-\pi ,\pi)$ could be represented by a trigonometric series, today called a Fourier series.
