ab: Two powerful currents affect collegiate mathematics at the beginning of the
21st century: the growing world-wide emphasis on universal access to
post-secondary education and the extraordinary spread of mathematical
methods to fields as diverse as cinema and genomics. Paradoxically, as
the importance of mathematics grows and its utility expands, so does
competition for mathematically-minded students. To thrive, mathematics
must diversify and democratize, allowing students access to its unique
and powerful benefits from many different angles.
