ab: Summary: Teachers are continuously confronted with instructional
interventions. However, often they do not get adopted for different
reasons. Efforts to design, use, and do research on materials in a real
setting through collaborative work between researchers and
practitioners have been shown to promote adoption of innovations. In
this paper we explore the possibilities for developing materials using
design-based research (DBR) focusing on a systematical development of
mathematical problem solving competence. At the end, we discuss some
theoretical principles in accordance with DBR, which could be useful
for the future development of materials relating to teaching and
learning of problem solving heuristics both for the practical
implementation and for further theoretical research in the area.
