This talk was given at a U.S. Library of Congress conference in 1999, ``Frontiers of the Mind in the 21st Century''. After reviewing some mistaken predictions made by Poincar\'e and Hilbert at the beginning of the twentieth century, indications are given of subsequent progress. Topology is regarded as the best illustration of the new character of mathematics while the greatest contrast with the nineteenth century is in the greater interaction of different fields and structures. Examples of the interaction of mathematics with physics and with biology are given.
