ab: Summary: This paper describes a study which was undertaken to investigate
the impact of teaching mathematics using mathematical modelling and
applications at senior secondary school level in India. While
traditionally the emphasis in mathematics teaching in India is on the
development of procedural skills, the study shows that the use of
modelling and applications enabled by technology enhanced student’s
understanding of concepts and led them to explore mathematical ideas
beyond their level. Using this approach, a balanced use of technology
and paper pencil skills led to a deeper understanding of the subject.
