ab: The article presents a brief portrayal of the life and work of the French
mathematician and revolutionary Gaspard Monge (1746‒1818), one of
Fourier’s teachers who accompanied Napoleon on his expedition to
Egypt. He was one of the founders of modern pure mathematics and a
specialist in geometry, almost the first since Apollonius of Perga.
