From the introduction: As the mathematical reform movement continues to enhance the quality of mathematics education at all levels, three components have emerged as being key in promoting systemic change: professional development, curriculum materials, and assessment. Of these three, the one that has received the least attention is assessment. In this article I will focus upon the development and use of performance assessments, which have been viewed by mathematics educators as a means to align assessment with new reform curricula and to improve the links between teaching practice and assessment.
