A total of 1803 1st to 4th grade elementary students participated from public schools in the states of Sao Paolo and Bahia in Brazil. They were given a written test, composed of 12 problems related to addition and subtraction operations, which involved situations of composition, transformation and comparison, using small numerical values. A growing trend in the percentage of correct answers was observed according to grade level although, at differing levels and rate in student from both states.
