The mathematician Nikolaus Braschman (1796--1866), born in Moravia and educated in Vienna, later went to Russia and worked in St. Petersburg, Kazan, and Moscow. Besides his mathematical publications one knows only very few published hints which allow to understand his philosophical and methodological positions. This paper discusses two of them: (i) his understanding of the role of mathematics in the liberal arts education, and (ii) his views concerning the nature of space and the role of geometry in studying it.
