Summary: This paper reports on STEM education and offers an illustration of a curricular effort, Engineering is Elementary, to provide students access to engineering concepts. Challenges and opportunities for integration of mathematics into engineering applications are discussed. Connections between the engineering design process and mathematical model activities provide a way of thinking about the cognitive processes underlying the integration of these two STEM areas. Content alignment between mathematics and the EiE curriculum are provided and issues in developing effective integrated learning opportunities for students are raised.
