The authors give a rough idea of the variety of research questions and approaches of German mathematics education. For example, they analyze 13 high-performing fourth graders' ideas concerning negative numerals, focusing on the differences and semantic variances between intuitive and mathematically intended concepts. The children's journal entries give examples of how the thinking processes of learners can contribute to clarifying the philosophical problems arising with the extension of the number range. He journal entries are presented in the original German with English translations.
