abstract = {Summary: Based on the analysis of right and wrong procedures for questions from Brazilian mathematics textbook, we analyze how algebraic knowledge can influence solving problems that involve area formulas. We analyze some aspects related to the stages of solving an algebraic problem, such as the right and the wrong procedure on mapping the problem; knowledge mobilized to transform the problem on an algebraic formula (equation); solving the procedure and formulating the answer. Algebraic writing, data analysis evidenced that many students have difficulties with symbolic expressions in a general situation. On numeric attempts, the domain is always natural. Despite studying a small clipping of knowing mathematics, we hope to contribute to the formulation of effective didactic situations of teaching and learning mathematics.},
