ab: Summary: The article presents the views of some experts upon the
development of mathematical thinking of preschool children over time,
from the first understanding of the concept of numbers to new
approaches in the field of cognitive development which involve the
child’s awareness of his own cognitive activity ‒ metacognition,
the skill that is very useful in solving mathematical challenges as
early as in kindergarten. Next presented is the general outline of the
innovative project dedicated to the introduction of new approaches from
the field of cognitive development of children, as well as a survey
examining the impact of training of metacognitive skills upon the
achievement at solving mathematical exercises.
