ab: Summary: This paper focuses on the notation invented and used by students
in a study concerning the process of abstraction. Participants were
asked to identify the symmetries of a square, and to further
investigate the various properties of the group formed under
composition of the identified elements. Particular attention will here
be paid to the differences in approach by academic track and vocational
track high-school students in embracing the task, a difference which
appeared to stem largely from the creation and use of notation for
representing the members of the group.
