A numerical classification of common agaric fungi (mushrooms/toadstools) is outlined. The idea is to see agaric morphology as sets of observations about the cap, stem, gills and spores, which are listed as numerals in a set order. It is a type of place value system and minimises language in communicating these observations. The numerical classification leads on to cluster analysis, requiring the application of co-ordinate geometry and matrices. The dendrogram is a method of portraying the results of clustering, which has implications for the botanist and taxonomist and, of course, the philosophy of fungi. (orig.)
