Summary: We introduce a hierarchy of cyclic languages. The $k$th level of this hierarchy consists of all cyclic languages which are equal to some Boolean combination of size $k$ of strongly cyclic languages. We then show how this hierarchy can be characterized by chains of idempotents in monoids. Finally, we give a method to compute an optimal (in the number of terms) decomposition of a cyclic language into strongly cyclic languages.
