Summary: Invoking duality arguments from the calculus of variations we derive a reliable a posteriori energy error estimator for obstacle problems. Though its efficiency depends on a minimization procedure with respect to some dualvariable, no admissibility constraints are imposed to be obeyed exactly. The method is very generic and therefore easily adapted to other convex minimization problems. Numerical experiments are presented, that demonstrate its potential.
