Large eddy simulation for incompressible flows. An introduction. (English) Zbl 0964.76002

Scientific Computation. Berlin: Springer. xv, 319 p. DM 119.00; öS 869.00; sFr 103.00; £41.00; $ 59.95 (2001).
In the first introductory chapter, the author explains in general how the hydrodynamic processes can be modeled, and what is the large eddy simulation (LES). The second chapter provides an explanation to the scale separation and to band-pass filters. In the third chapter, the author discusses Navier-Stokes equations and their filtering, as well as the decomposition of nonlinear terms. The next two chapters are devoted to the functional modeling, both in isotropic and anisotropic case. The structural modeling is described in the sixth chapter, with the classification of models. The seventh chapter gives the interpretation of LES results and deals with numerical errors, whereas the eighth one presents an additional analysis of data obtained by LES. In the ninth chapter, boundary conditions at the wall are discussed and several wall models of turbulence are presented. The tenth chapter discusses practical details of implementing the large eddy simulation technique, and some examples of applications are given in the final eleventh chapter.
