Handle-decompositions of PL 4-manifolds. (English)

The authors find combinatorial conditions on colored 5-graphs representing compact piecewise-linear 4-manifolds which characterize (up to PL homeomorphism) the connected sums of copies of $S^1\times S^3$, $S^1 {\underset\sim \to\times} S^3$ (the twisted $S^3$-bundle over $S^1)$ or 4-dimensional handle-bodies. The conditions are formulated in terms of the concept of regular genus, as defined in [{\it C. Gagliardi}, Geom. Dedicata 22, 261-281 (1987; Zbl 0618.57009)].
