The book is a paperback version of {\it M. Lothaire}'s ``Combinatorics on words". First published in 1983 (Zbl 0514.20045), it is now a well recognized reference on the subject. This edition, dedicated to the memory of Marcel-Paul Schützenberger, contains many corrections but no chapter has been updated. It is worth mentioning the comment by {\it Dominique Perrin} in the preface explaining the origin of the name Lothaire.
