Sethian, James A. Theory, algorithms, and applications of level set methods for propagating interfaces. (English) Zbl 0868.65059 Iserles, A. (ed.), Acta Numerica Vol. 5, 1996. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. 309-395 (1996). This is an expository paper on work by the author on the representation of propagating surfaces by level-set methods. The paper begins with a discussion of the theory of propagating surfaces and compares level-set methods with more traditional, Lagrangian representations. It then goes on to numerical approximation based on essentially non-oscillating schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws. Applications are given to many practical interface problems, including crystal growth and image enhancement. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0845.00011].
