The Beurling-Selberg extremal functions for a ball in Euclidean space. (English) Zbl 0859.30029

Dans le cas d’une variable, traité par Beurling et Selberg avec \(\nu=-1/2\): étant donné \((\xi,\delta,\nu)\in\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}^*_+\times]-1,+\infty[\), on cherche le minimum de \(\int^{+\infty}_{-\infty} [T(x)-S(x)]|x|^{2\nu+1}dx\) pour \(S\) et \(T\) fonctions entières réelles (sur \(\mathbb{R})\), de type exponentiel \(\leq 2\pi\delta\) et vérifiant \(S(x)\leq\text{sgn}(x-\xi)\leq T(x)\), \(\forall x\in \mathbb{R}\backslash\{\xi\}\); on montre que ce minimum \(u_\nu(\xi,\delta)\) est atteint, par un couple unique \(S=s_\nu(\cdot;\xi,\delta)\), \(T=t_\nu(\cdot;\xi,\delta)\), et on le calcule à l’aide des fonctions de Bessel \(J_\nu\), \(J_{\nu+1}\).
Dans le cas de \(N\) variables: étant donné \((r,\delta,\nu)\in \mathbb{R}^*_+\times\mathbb{R}^*_+\times]-1,+\infty[\), on cherche le minimum de \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} [G(x)-F(x)]|x|^{2\nu+2-N}dx \] (où \(|\cdot|\) est la norme euclidienne) pour \(F\) et \(G\) fonctions entières réelles (sur \(\mathbb{R}^N\)), de type exponentiel \(\leq2\pi\delta\) et vérifiant \(F(x)\leq 1/2[1-\text{sgn}(|x|-r)]\leq G(x)\), \(\forall x\in \mathbb{R}^N\), \(|x|\neq r\); on montre que ce minimum est \(\leq\omega_{N-1} u_\nu(r,\delta)\) (\(\omega_{N-1}\) mesure euclidienne de la sphère unité de \(\mathbb{R}^N\)), avec égalité si et seulement si \((J_\nu J_{\nu+1})(\pi\delta r)\) est nul, et l’on construit, pur leurs développements tayloriens à l’origine, à partir de ceux de \(s_\nu(\cdot;\pm r,\delta)\) et \(t_\nu(\cdot;\pm r,\delta)\), des fonctions radicales \(F\), \(G\) pour lesquelles la deuxième intégrale ci-dessus vaut \(\omega_{N-1}u_\nu(r,\delta)\).
Dans une autre extension du problème (de noveau pour une variable), on se donne une fonction entière \(E\) de type exponentiel fini \(\tau(E)\) et appartenant à la classe de Pólya, i.e. \(y=\text{Im }z>0\Rightarrow |E(\overline z)|<|E(z)|\) et \({d\over dy}|E(x+iy)|\geq 0\), \(\forall x\); pour \(\xi\in \mathbb{R}\), \(E(\xi)\neq 0\), on cherche le minimum de \(\int^{+\infty}_{-\infty} [T(x)-S(x)][E(x)]^{-2}dx\) pour \(S\) et \(T\) fonctions entières réelles, de type exponentiel \(\leq 2\tau(E)\) et vérifiant \(S(x)\leq\text{sgn}(x-\xi)\leq T(x)\), \(\forall x\in \mathbb{R}\backslash\{\xi\}\); on montre que, de nouveau, ce minimum est atteint, pour un couple \((S,T)\) unique, et qui’il vaut \(2/K(\xi,\xi)\), où \(K\) est le noyau reproduisant d’un espace de Hilbert de fonctions entières associé à \(E\) par L. de Branges [Hilbert spaces of entire functions (1968; Zbl 0157.43301)]; on a en particulier la formule \(4\pi yK(z,z)=|E(x+iy)|^2- |E(x-iy)|^2\).
