The author provides a rather complete account of a variety of spaces which have been described elsewhere in a variety of ways with no apparent central theme. The author demonstrates that all these spaces are generated by two basic constructions: planks and resolutions. This truly unifies and simplifies the understanding of all these spaces because it demonstrates that they do have a lot in common. There are many unsolved problems.
