Montanaro, Adriano On the indeterminateness of the constitutive equations for certain dissipative materials. (English) Zbl 0773.73003 Atti Ist. Veneto Sci. Lett. Arti, Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat. 148, 109-126 (1990). The paper compares thermodynamic relations for rate materials of complexity one derived using (i) a Clausius-Duhem inequality (ii) an entropy balance law. Uniqueness theorems regarding equilibrium state functions such as stress, internal energy and entropy are derived based on axiomatic statements relating to possible thermodynamic processes. These results and another on ‘static internal dissipation’ allow the entropy to be defined in terms of the internal energy and equilibrium stress, and thus the variation of entropy in processes is determined. The definition of Galilean invariance is not standard.
