The relativistic noncommutative nonassociative group of velocities and the Thomas rotation. (English) Zbl 0693.20067

Die homogenen orthochronen Lorentztransformationen L haben eine treue Parameterdarstellung \(L=L(v,\rho)\) mit \(v\in {\mathbb{R}}^ 3_ c:=\{u\in {\mathbb{R}}^ 3|\) \(u^ 2_ 1+u^ 2_ 2+u^ 2_ 3<c^ 2\}\), c \(=\) Lichtgeschwindigkeit, und \(\rho \in SO_ 3({\mathbb{R}})\). Diese Darstellung läßt sich ausnützen um eine algebraische Verknüpfung * auf der Menge \({\mathbb{R}}^ 3_ c\) der zulässigen Geschwindigkeiten zu definieren: Nimmt man zwei Lorentztransformationen L(u,id), L(v,id) ohne Rotationsanteil (in der Physik: “Boost” genannt), so ergibt sich: \(L(u,id)\cdot L(v,id)=L(w,\delta)\) mit eindeutig bestimmtem \(w\in {\mathbb{R}}^ 3_ c\) und \(\delta \in SO_ 3({\mathbb{R}})\). \(\delta:=tom[u,v]\) ist die aus der speziellen Relativitätstheorie bekannte Thomas Rotation. Definiert man \(u*v=w\), so wird \(({\mathbb{R}}^ 3_ c,*)\) zu einer Loop, in der noch das folgende abgeschwächte Assoziativ- und Kommutativgesetz gilt: \[ a*(b*x)=(a*b)*tom[a,b](x),\quad a*b=tom[a,b](b*a). \] Es ist interessant zu notieren, daß diese Loop \(({\mathbb{R}}^ 3_ c,*)\) dieselben Axiome erfüllt, wie die additive Loop \((F,+)\) der Fastbereiche \((F,+,\cdot)\), die bei der Untersuchung scharf 2-fach transitiver Gruppen auftreten.
Diese vom Autor entdeckte Loop-Struktur von \(({\mathbb{R}}^ 3_ c,\cdot)\) ermöglicht ein viel besseres Verständnis der Rollen, die die Boost und die Thomas-Rotationen in der Lorentzgruppe spielen. Außerdem kann man nun formal mit Boost und Thomas-Rotationen rechnen, ohne auf die Matrizendarstellungen zurückgehen zu müssen, wodurch die Rechnungen kürzer und übersichtlicher werden. In diesem Aufsatz erläutert der Autor seine Vorgehensweise und rechnet einige algebraische Relationen von Thomas-Rotationen aus.
