This is an unaltered reprint of the utmost interesting correspondence between C. F. Gauss and his friend Wolfgang Bolyai, the father of the famous Johann Bolyai who was one of the founders of non-euclidean geometry. The collection of letters consists of 42 letters, 18 of them being from Gauss. It includes among other writings Bolyai's Theoria parallelarum. The editors added six letters written by the Gauss biographer Sartorius von Waltershausen or by his correspondents and own helpful comments on Gauss's and Bolyai's life and works as well as on certain passages of the printed letters.
