Discharge of a jet of heavy liquid from the opening in a horizontal wall in case of a free surface. (Russian) Zbl 0621.76034

The paper investigates two problems on the discharge of a heavy ideal incompressible liquid out of a slot of length \(2l\) and of a small hollow in a point \(P\) in the horizontal ground. The liquid is bounded from above by a free surface. The nonlinear problems are solved using the method proposed by G. Birkhoff and E. H. Zarantonello [Jets, wakes and cavities. New York: Academic Press (1957; Zbl 0077.18703)] who gave the solution for the discharge of an unbounded liquid. Formulae are obtained for finding the form of the free surface and of the outflowing jet and for the contraction ratio of the jet. Numerical results have been obtained on the ES 1033 computer, some of them are shown in three diagrams.
