Schelin, Charles W.
Calculator function approximation.
(English)
[J] Am. Math. Mon. 90, 317-325 (1983). ISSN 0002-9890

Author's introduction: For about the past 10 years elementary function values have been available at the touch of a button on a hand-held calculator. The unified algorithm used in most hand calculators to approximate elementary functions is the subject of this paper. Surprisingly, this general algorithm which employs bit by bit approximation does not depend on results or techniques of the calculus. To begin, a few excerpts from the history of elementary function approximation are presented.
