The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. Problems and solutions: 1965-1984. (English) Zbl 0584.00003

Washington, D. C.: The Mathematical Association of America. Distr. by John Wiley & Sons. XII, 147 p. $ 24.00 (1985).
The main parts of the book consist of the problems from the 1965 through 1984 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competitions, followed by the solutions as published in various issues of the American Mathematical Monthly and Mathematics Magazine. The print size varies, presumably due to the use of a photographic process from originals of varying print size, and on some pages the print is so small as to be difficult to read. Some errors in the originals have been corrected; a few have remained. E.g., in solution A-5, p. 56, \((-x,-g(x))\) should be \((-x,-g(-x)),\) and in solution A-4, p. 67, the last \(x_{n-3}\) should be \(x_{n-4}\). In addition to the two main parts there are recollections of the first Putnam competition between Harvard and West Point in 1933 by Herbert Robbins, lists of the winning teams (institutions but not team members) and the top 5 individual contestants from each competition, and an excellent index of problems by topic, concept, etc.
