Maidenhead, Berkshire: McGraw-Hill Book Co. Ltd. xx, 236 p. £15.95 /sc (1992).
The book is written for subject (not computer science) experts who wish to effectively use contemporary information retrieval technologies to obtain professional information directly without intermediaries. The notions of “data”, “information”, and “knowledge” are clearly defined. Many statistical data about sources of information and their use are given. A large part of the book is devoted to various practical techniques how to search information in data bases using computer terminals and means of telecommunication. Numerous examples of dialogue are given. The material is presented informally. The style of presentations resembles a dialogue with the reader. The book ends with a set of simple, easy-to-follow rules presented as Subject Expert Searching Technique defining an effective way for information hunting.
