The paper is concerned with the $\Gamma$-convergence of gradient flows and with a suitable generalization to metric spaces. It also contains a summary of the abstract results as well as of some of the applications in the context of the Ginzburg-Landau, Allen-Cahn, and Cahn-Hilliard equations and of Mullins-Sekerka-type evolutions.
