The book presents a comprehensive introduction to large eddy simulation (LES) for incompressible turbulent flows. It is the third and once again enlarged edition, two additional chapters with respect to the 2nd edition have been included. The French version of the book was originally published in 1998 [for review see Zbl 0927.76001; for review of the English translation see Zbl 1020.76001)]. After a short introduction into computational fluid dynamics and the encountered difficulties in the numerical simulation of turbulent flows, an overview of the typically used turbulence models is given. The following chapter defines and discusses the properties of filtering in space and time, illustrated by several examples, which constitutes the foundation of LES. In chapter 3 the governing equations for LES are derived by applying the previously introduced low-pass filters to incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in physical and spectral space and also in general coordinates. In this new edition different formulations for large eddy simulation from a mathematical point of view are presented. Subsequently, a classification of the employed subgrid scale models into functional and structural ones is given together with a discussion of their advantages and disadvantages. Practical questions of coupling LES with numerical techniques and the analysis and evaluation of numerical results obtained with LES are presented from theoretical and practical point of view. One chapter is entirely devoted to the difficult question of modelling boundary conditions. The following two chapters deal with the coupling of LES with multiresolution and multidomain techniques and also with recently introduced hybrid approaches that relate LES to classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The implementation of different LES techniques is discussed in some detail, and numerous examples of applications are presented. A new chapter on coupling LES with passive and active scalars is included. The two annexes present some basics of turbulence and its statistical and spectral analyses followed by a brief description of the EDQNM model for isotropic and anisotropic flows. Finally, it should be mentioned that the book contains an extensive bibliography with more than 800 references.
