Sliding mode observers for robust detection and reconstruction of actuator and sensor faults.
(English)
[J] Int. J. Robust Nonlinear Control 13, No. 5, 443-463 (2003). ISSN 1049-8923

The paper presents a method for robust reconstruction of faults using sliding mode observers that minimize the effect of system uncertainty on the reconstruction using the $H_{\infty}$ approach. First, the results for actuator faults are given. Then, they are extended to sensor faults by the introduction of a suitable filter. It enables one to treat sensor faults as actuator faults. The effectiveness of both methods is illustrated on an example.
