Bonahon, Francis Geometric structures on 3-manifolds. (English) Zbl 0997.57032 Daverman, R. J. (ed.) et al., Handbook of geometric topology. Amsterdam: Elsevier. 93-164 (2002). This is a nice overview of the role of geometric structures in 3-dimensional topology, highly motivated by Thurston’s program of geometrization of 3-manifolds. The survey covers topics from the basic notions on geometric structures on 3-manifolds to the results about existence of such structures, including also characteristic splittings and topological applications of the existence of geometric structures. The amount of notions and results covered by this paper is quite large. Most of the proofs have been omitted, but references for them are conveniently supplied. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0977.00029].
